Q1. Could you tell us how did you start circus?
A1. My family and I went to see Cirque du Soleil Fascination in Osaka, Japan in 1992, when I was 8-years-old. I don’t remember saying it, however, my parents told me that I clearly stated after seeing the show that, “This is what I want to do.” What I do remember is that I was enchanted, mesmerized and totally excited by what I had just seen. I loved everything about it and my dream to one day be part of such a show/company began. Growing up in Kyoto, Japan, circus was not something that was popular or a realm into which you could even enter. So, I continued on with my training in gymnastics, ballet and swimming for some years and moved on to be a competitive diver & rhythmic gymnast. I loved training, learning and growing, but I wanted to meld sports with art and not just compete. Then life gave me the opportunity to audition for Cirque du Soleil in 2000. Two years later I signed my first contract for “Quidam.” And my dream came true 11 years later as I premiered in the same city where I had seen Fascination.
Q2. Which country have you traveled?
A2. I have had the opportunity to travel and spend time in North America, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia, Brazil, Taiwan, Thailand, India, Indonesia, Laos, Sri Lanka, Russia, the UAE and many countries in Europe as well. Also, I was very fortunate to have received a scholarship to travel around the globe with a Japanese NPO called “The Peace Boat” when I was 15-years-old. During our 3-month voyage around the southern hemisphere I got to visit 18 different countries, usually for just a day, however, it was a beautiful and eye-opening journey and marked the beginning of my nomadic ways.
Q3. How is your life like traveling the world?
A3. Since my time on the Peace Boat and many years on the road with CDS, travelling and living out of suitcases became my norm. Even today, I am not completely based in any one country or place. I wish to some day grow roots, but for now, I love getting to be a citizen of the world.
Q4. What did you learn from traveling the world?
A4. I believe as the famous Thai tourist T-shirt says, “Same Same but Different” that all people are basically the same but at the same time also unique. Regardless of race or background, innately we are Human. We all need/want shelter, food, family, a sense of belonging, respite, joy, love, creativity, inspiration and often celebration. We want to be heard, to express, to love, be loved and be connected. Yet, each culture is distinct in its manifestation. I love learning about different country’s traditions, values, and ways of being.
Q5. How did circus change your life?
A5. First of all, joining the circus made me realize dreams do come true, and secondly that our limits are never our limits. The circus taught me so many invaluable life lessons and brought so many special people into my life. I am deeply grateful for all of the inspiring, creative, dedicated and talented beings I have had the opportunity to work with, learn from and share life’s journey with.
Q6. What are the most important things in your life? What are your life goals?
A6. Authenticity of expression & in being has become one of the most important things in my life. Understanding & delving deeper into the mind, body, soul connection and how to embetter ourselves— helping each other to heal and grow. Daily, I am discovering and exploring how I may make a small contribution to the world through my life experiences, gifts, passions and creativity.

Q1. どのようにサーカスを始めたのですか？
A1. 1992年、私が8歳の時に、家族と一緒に、シルクドゥソレイユのファシナシオンを大阪で観ました。覚えてはいないのですが、ショーを見た後に、「これが私のやりたいことだ！」と言ったと、後に両親から聞きました。私が覚えているのは、その時、観たばかりのショーに魅了され、心を奪われ、とてもワクワクしていたということです。ショーの全てのことに関して惚れ込み、いつかこのようなショー、会社に関わりたいという夢が始まりました。
京都で育っていた私にとっては、サーカスは身近なものではなく、簡単に入っていけるような分野ではありませんでした。なので、体操、バレエと水泳のトレーニングを数年続け、その後、飛び込み競技と新体操の道に進みました。トレーニングや学ぶこと、成長することは大好きでしたが、大会に出場するだけでなく、スポーツとアートを融合させたかったのです。そして、2000年に、シルクドゥソレイユのオーディションというチャンスが訪れました。その2年後、初めての契約となる「キダム」にサインをしました。そして、初めてファシナシオンを観た、同じ都市で、11年後に初舞台を踏み、夢が叶うこととなったのです。
Q2. 今まで、どの国を旅しましたか？
A2. 北アメリカ、日本、香港、シンガポール、オースタラリア、ブラジル、台湾、タイ、インド、インドネシア、ラオス、スリランカ、ロシア、アラブと多くのヨーロッパの国を旅する機会をいただきました。それから、ありがたいことに、15歳の時に、スカラーシップを頂き、日本のNPO法人ピースボートと共に、世界中を旅しました。３ヶ月の南半球の航海の間に、18か国もの国を訪れることができました。1日の滞在だとしても、それはとても美しい目覚めとなるような旅で、私の非定住な生活の始まりとなりました。
Q3. 世界を旅する生活は、どのようなものですか？
A3. ピースボートでの経験と、長年のシルクドゥソレイユとの旅を経て、スーツケースを持って世界を転々とする生活が、私にとって普通になりました。今日でも、完全にはどこの国にも場所にも定住していません。いつかは根を生やしたいと思っていますが、今は、「世界の住民」でいることを好んでいます。
Q4. 世界を旅することから、どのようなことを学びましたか？
A4. 有名なタイのツアー会社のTシャツに書いてあったと思うのですが、「Same Same but Different」その意味は、すべての人間は基本的には同じであるが、同時にユニークでもある。人種や、生い立ちに関わらず、本質的には私たちは同じ人間であるということ。私たちは皆、住む場所、食べ物、家族、属しているという感覚、息抜き、喜び、愛、創造性、インスピレーション、そして多くの祝い事を求め、あるいは必要としています。私たちは、声を聞いて欲しい、表現したい、愛し、愛されたい、つながっていたいと願っています。けれども、それぞれの文化において、明示、表明の仕方が異なります。私は、それぞれの国の伝統や、価値観、そしてあり方の違いを学ぶことがとても好きです。
Q5. サーカスにどのような影響を受けましたか？
A5. まずはじめに、サーカスに携わったことで、夢は叶うということ、そして、「限界」は、決して限界ではないということに気付きました。サーカスは、計り知れないライフレッスンを教えてくれ、多くの特別な人との出会いを運んできてくれました。今まで出会った、共に働き、学び、人生を分け合い、クリエイティブな刺激をくれ、献身的で才能溢れる全ての人たちに、私は心から、深く、感謝しています。
Q6. 人生にとって、最も重要なことは何ですか？人生のゴールは何ですか？
A6. 表現、自分の在る姿が、正真正銘であるということは、私にとってとても大切なこととなってきました。精神、肉体、魂の繋がりと、どのように自分たちを高めていくかを理解し、深く探求する。つまりは、お互いを助け合い、癒し合い、成長していく。私の人生経験、与えられたもの、情熱、そして創造力を通して、どのようにして、世界に対して小さな貢献をしていけるのか、日々、発見し、見出しています。
