Q1. How did you start circus?

A1. We (Andi & Kev) began with Cirque du Soleil in 2001, when we were invited to take part in a General Formation at the Cirque du Soleil’s headquarters in Montreal. Casting scouts had approached us a few years earlier, during a World Gymnastics Championships in China. We didn’t know much about the company at the time, but after seeing our first show at the Royal Albert Hall, we knew it was where we wanted to be. We fell in love with it immediately and haven’t looked back since.

Gasya joined the company when our first show, Varekai began touring Australia in 2006. She was 17 years old at the time and straight out of competing for her country in sports acrobatics. We toured together for 4 years before leaving the show to create and perform in Cirque du Soleil’s newest show IRIS, which was probably one of the most beautiful shows Cirque du Soleil has ever created.

Q2. I heard you’ve worked for Cirque du Soleil over 19 years and have never been out from the show. How do you take care of yourselves?

A2. Kevin has never missed a single performance. I, unfortunately have missed several performances, as I wanted to be present for the birth of my children with Gasya. I don’t regret this at all. When it comes to both health and diet, we all have a very balanced routine. We eat little and often, sometimes taking six meals a day. We try not to restrict ourselves from anything but we don’t over indulge either. We like all kinds of food (and drink), and think it would be a shame not to appreciate them. When we first joined Cirque du Soleil, we would train a lot. Our workout routine was very structured and extremely disciplined. We credit our long Cirque careers, to the time we spent in the gym and the specific exercise routines we developed over the years. Our shoulder workout in particular are very unusual but extremely affective. Over the years we have toned down our workouts and listened to what our bodies are telling us. We still go to the gym but lift light loads and focus more on the right technique. We never weigh ourselves and believe that self-feeling is enough to monitor where you are at in your fitness.

Q3. What is important when it comes to your family?

A3. That we live full and exciting lives together. Every decision we now make, we make as a family. Whether it’s on a personal or professional level. We do not always agree but we respect each other's point of view. We want to never have any regrets and to be able to look back and say, “What a life that was!" If there’s one thing we hope to teach our children, it’s to never be afraid to follow your dreams. It may not always be easy but if you have the passion, determination and willingness to work for it, you can achieve anything.

Q4. How do you build your family stronger and healthier?

A4. By Passion, Purpose and Patience. We will never ask our children to do anything we wouldn't do ourselves. We lead by example, so to speak. It is important that we continue to grow on a personal and professional level. We’re always looking for new inspiration and new challenges. We’ve had an amazing career with Cirque du Soleil so far, and we now hope to show some of this to our children. We will continue to approach life as an adventure, as there is so much we still can learn. The world is our classroom!

Q5. How do you manage to be successful artists and parents at the same time?

A5. Being successful Cirque du Soleil artists and parents at the same time does not come without its challenges, but the rewards by far outweigh the difficulties. Seeing your children in the audience and the excitement in their eyes as you perform for them, makes it all worth while. We want to make them proud!

Q6. How do you overcome difficulties as a family and as individuals?

A6. We overcome them as a family. We have very strong family values and are fortunate in that we have a very close family unit. We owe a lot to our parents. We know that if it was not for them, and the lessons they gave us, we would not be where we are today.

Andi - I don’t look at things as difficulties but more as learning experiences and boy, have I learnt a lot. The older I get and especially since becoming a father, I have realized that some problems are not real problems. I keep my life very simple and always focus on what’s important. My family!

Kev - It’s all about the way one perceives difficulties. I usually ask myself a series of questions. Firstly, “Do I have a problem?” If the answer is NO, then I don’t worry about it. If the answer is YES, then I ask myself “Can I change it?’ If the answer is NO, then I don’t worry about it. If the answer is YES, then I put all my focus on changing, or overcoming it. My point is, don’t worry about something that you can’t change.

Gasya - I don’t shy away from them. If I know something is going to be difficult, it makes me more determined to attack it head on.

Q7. What is the best and the hardest part of being circus artists?

A7. Andi - The most rewarding part is to receive the appreciation from the audience after every performance/show. The hardest part is not being able to bath and put my kids to bed every night.

Kev - The best part is that you feel a belonging to a bigger community. A multitude of disciplines with one common language. We have some amazing friends from all over the world, and these friendships are very precious to us. The hardest part was always the unsocial working hours. Shows are generally in the evenings and weekends. As a result, we often missed out on some fun times with friends. We wouldn’t change it for the world though.

Gasya - The best part of being a circus artist is performing. I feel alive when I perform. The hardest part was putting my professional career aside to have children. I wanted both but that wasn’t possible at the same time. This just gave me more determination to get back after having two children.

Q8. What is the best and the hardest part of being parents?

A8. Andi - The best part of being a parent is seeing your children’s personality develop and appreciating all the little moments it took to get them there. The hardest part in the beginning was coming to terms with the fact your life is no longer your own, which now I’m completely grateful for.

Kev - Still now, the best part is when my son falls asleep in my arms. From the first moment I held him, I knew that I would never tire of having him in my arms. I love also to see the excitement and pride in his little eyes, when he learns something new. The hardest part is the self sacrifice. Always putting your children and family first means that sometimes you have to make some very hard choices, and we have made some very difficult choices in our careers. Choosing to be a parent, however, comes with a huge responsibility and can never be compromised. Family must always come first.

Gasya - The best part of being a parent is learning from your children. They taught me to enjoy and be grateful for the simple memories. The hardest part is leaving them.

Q9. If you have any message for the audience, what would you want to share with them?

Don’t be afraid to follow your dreams and understand that your dreams do not have to stop if you ever decide to start a family. In life, try to take any presented situation and look, firstly, at what benefits can be gained from it. If it's something that you feel would be advantageous for you and your family, take a look at any obstacles, if any, that may be in the way. Then, do what is necessary to overcome these obstacles.

Thank you very much Andrew, Kevin and Gasya!
